Regional Proposal for the Right to Sustainable Livelihood and the Enabling of Social and Political Participation in South Asia.

The project is Funded by OXFAM/ N(o)VIB. The project is administered by CHA (Consortium to Humanitarian Agency, Sri-lanka) In South Asia. The project is implemented in five countries such as Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri-lanka simultaneously. It is implemented and administered by NESAC, RSDC (Rural Self-Reliance Development Centre)   and FOHRID (Forum for Human Rights and Democracy) in Nepal. NESAC is lead organization in Nepal.

The regional proposal developed in the beginning of 2004 by a group of resource persons drawn from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka was formulated with the idea of striving to provide for adequate safeguards and protection that would afford dignity and justice to the people of the South Asian Continent.  This group was convened by CHA along with 8 partner organizations of the above mentioned countries initiated the project with a vision of developing, organizing and conducting activities in relation to achieving the same objectives for a period of three years commencing April 2004.

The objectives of this proposal were developed following the visions of Millennium Development Goals, which inter-alia seek to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; promote gender equality and empower women; achieve universal primary education. It was also directly and indirectly influenced by the SAARC Social Charter, which sought to improve the economic well being of the people of the region.  The proposal also links with the global and regional strategic objectives of OXFAM/N(o)VIB in the South Asian Region.

The principal objective of the programme is to enable actors, activist, agents, participants and beneficiaries “to centre stage the people for a life in dignity, now and in the future”.  The key focus of the program was to afford them the right to sustainable livelihoods, which enables and broadens social and political participation and enlarges political societies in South Asia.

The first phase is completed in March 2007 and the final evaluation has completed. The Final Evaluation Report 2007 is available in web. The second phase is being implemented.
